Ideas - Books to Read - Ideas

At this time we have a book selection for July and a book selection for August, and then . . . . a big blank.

Post your ideas here and we can have some discussion. We've had a request for a Christmas-themed story for reading closer to the holidays and talked about reviewing an old classic, so if you know of any specific titles, let us know.

  1. While looking for our next books to read I came across the Seattle Public Library's book list of suggestions for book clubs. A couple titles appealed to me. THE GOOD EARTH, Pearl S. Buck is a classic and timeless read which won the Pulitzer Prize. It is about a Chinese farmer and his loyal wife. Another title I have heard of from others is THE BLIND ASSASSIN'S DAUGHTER, Margaret Atwood. It is the interweaving of mystery, scifi, and love story which explores the relationship of two Canadian sisters across time and mortality. Another one I am not familiar with is CAST HISTORIES, Kate Atkinson. A detective opens several cold cases as families compel him to explore their chilling similarity. Now I need to look for the availability at the library!

  2. Out of the three choices, I think THE GOOD EARTH sounds like a good possibility. I've never read it, and it would add to the cultural reads we've chosen in the past. The description of the Margaret Atwood book reminds me a bit of The Time Traveler's Wife. I think we had a lot of mixed responses to that one.

  3. Sorry, I cannot come this evening but need to keep my sneezes and sniffles to myself. I would like to get a book from the kit if there is one available.
I enjoyed "A Walk in the Woods" and thought it an honest and realistic telling. I also liked the history and humor.

I liked "A Good Earth" and think it would be a good selection. I just read "A Glass Castle" and think it would made a lively discussion.
